Thinking and Personal skills
In my junior year I created the neoteric bevy called Tech Team to help run the school’s technology. A neoteric bevy is a club that has to benefit the school in some way. My high school, Alameda Community Learning Center (ACLC) is somewhat of a different school. We call our teachers facilitators; our students learners. I’ve grown to learn that we must take ownership of our own learning experience; our facilitators are there to guide us during our experience
Technology
Even as a young child I have always been interested in technology. When I was in 6th grade I joined tech team mostly doing miscellaneous tasks like make sure computers will turn on or not. I decided that I could handle more responsibility. So I went to Jake Powell who was the facilitator in charge of tech team and I started to do jobs for him. I networked printers to the computers and at first disassembled old computers to see how they worked. This taught me how to fix them later on. By the end of 6th grade, my fellow learners regarded me as the go-to tech person. As my friends still say to me to this day “James, make it work.”
Interpersonal and Collaborative ability
When I was in 9th grade tech team became a class, led by one learner who was really just a figure head. Then my friend Izzy and I were doing most if not all the work. By 10th grade tech team was nearly dropped altogether while I took care of some stuff like plugging in computers and random small problems but when I tried to take care of bigger problems like the actual fixing of computers the facilitators said to me “let the adults handle it.” Which when I started tech team as a Neoteric Bevy again in my junior year the waters where plagued with large amounts of diverse politics about how we shouldn’t have young learners running around fixing our tech, also, that there was no facilitator to watch over us. But I proved the facilitators wrong. My mission with tech team was to prove that even learners can, and should take care of things that should be adult work and to bring the computer count up to 40 and have them all work. I learned when trying to run tech team meetings no one came really for the reason was there wasn’t any time that all the tech team members had available. I created a point system where the learners in tech team could come to me during the times they didn’t have class and do computer maintenance work that I assigned them. In order to stay on tech team you had to have one point per week and if you didn’t get at least one point in a three week time span then you where off of the tech team. Tech team became a huge success under my leadership. We fixed everything from faulty hard ware to computer upgrading. In the end we got 40 computers up and running in the center and a system to make sure that we can easily maintain the computers. By the end of the year we where fixing all the problems at the school; Eon, the independent tech consultants, barely had anything left to do.
Personal qualities, work habits and attitudes
With Tech Team, I put my belief to work. I had a skill that I enjoyed; I shared it and asked nothing in return. I think that you should make others happy with the gifts and knowledge that life bestowed upon you. I believe that in life there are many challenges but those challenges are just missions that we have to accomplish to be a better person.
New Basics (math, language arts, science, and social studies)
ACLC has giving me tons of fulfilling experiences to look back on but, being able to be involved in community where I could use the skills I had to help the ACLC community was one of the most fulfilling experiences that I will hold dear for the rest of my life. Also having this respiratory of knowledge of engineering basics that I can look back on in the coming years. All the leadership skills I have gained with being a JC clerk, member of leadership and the leader of tech team I feel very happy with my accomplishments at ACLC. I take comfort in knowing that my legacy will live on as tech team will still existin the coming years.
